The statue was designed under the direction of French sculptor, Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi between 1875-1884. It was disassembled and shipped to New York City in 1885.

If you did not know already, It was originally intended to be erected near Port Said, beside the Suez Canal, Egypt to rival the Sphinx. The procedure was too expensive at the time for Egypt so the statue was redesigned in a slightly different style than what was envisioned, and in a different country. However, the symbolism remained the same: To illuminate the world with the ideals of liberty which was universal and meant to be shared all over the world.
